Sugar rush: 1,000 queue around the block to get their hands on... doughnuts

More than 1,000 sweet-toothed shoppers queued outside a new Krispy Kreme doughnut store to get their hands on one of the free treats.

Doughnut fans queued for up to two hours outside the new shop in Cardiff's St David's Centre.

The U.S. chain are opening their first Welsh store this month.

Bosses at their newest store managed to serve up 12,000 doughnuts in just 20 minutes to satisfy shoppers.

The huge line of 1,000 hungry customers outside the Krispy Kreme store was twice the amount who lined up to get their hands on an iPad 2 in the city last week.

Student Ceri Lewis, 20, said: 'It was a lovely doughnut, well worth the two-hour wait.
'It was really good fun waiting in line. It was the best queue I’ve ever been in for having a good laugh, much better than geeks waiting for an iPad.'

Katie de Souza, Krispy Kreme UK’s head of marketing, said: 'It was crazy.

'We have received a lot of requests from people in Wales asking when Krispy Kreme will be coming to them, so Cardiff was an obvious next step for us and we are very excited to be opening there.'

Krispy Kreme opened its U.K. store in Harrods in 2003, and has since opened 45 stores nationwide.
