- A 4-year old German Shepard named Bandit and his owner Sacramento Police Officer Gary Dahl have been on the force together since 2006. Bandit is currently one of three new K-9’s that is trained in patrol, narcotic’s detection, tracking, and article searches. Bandit is also S.W.A.T. certified. However, one day while responding to a reported home invasion buster was shot in the neck by a suspected robber while he was blocking the robber’s escape. The robber was later shot and killed by officers when he refused to drop his weapon, according to sources. Bandit had to be rushed to a veterinary hospital to treat his wonds.
Gary Dahl was emotional at times as he spoke outside the clinic as Bandit was being prepared for surgery. “He’s part of the family. He’s my partner,” Dahl said. Dahl also gave Bandit credit for taking a bullet that might have killed a colleague. “He didn’t hesitate. He did exactly what he was supposed to do and he paid a dear price for it.”

- Thankfully, Bandit was discharged from the hospital. Gary Dahl said that the residents of the area have shown an unprecedented concern and love for the dog, constantly sending flowers and dog food, and were willing to help with payment of medical bills.
